John James Audubon's illustration of the Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola) depicts a secretive wetland bird distinguished by its warm reddish-brown breast, gray cheeks, long slightly curved bill, and beautifully barred flanks. This elusive North American species inhabits freshwater marshes and dense stands of cattails, where it moves quietly through reeds and shallow water searching for insects and small aquatic creatures.
