John James Audubon's illustration of the Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) portrays an exceptionally graceful bird of prey recognized by its dramatic black-and-white plumage, long pointed wings, and deeply forked tail. This elegant aerial hunter inhabits southern forests and wetlands, where it glides effortlessly above the treetops while capturing insects and other small prey.
