John James Audubon's illustration of the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) portrays a distinctive North American songbird recognized by the male's glossy black plumage and brilliant scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches. This familiar wetland species inhabits marshes, grassy fields, and waterside vegetation, where males perch prominently among reeds while displaying their colorful wings and delivering their unmistakable calls.
