John James Audubon's illustration of the Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) captures a magnificent bird of prey distinguished by its rich reddish-brown shoulders, finely barred chest, and boldly patterned black-and-white wings and tail. This woodland raptor is frequently found near forests, wetlands, and river valleys, where it hunts small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians from elevated perches.
