John James Audubon's illustration of the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) depicts a magnificent forest bird recognized by its striking red crest, bold black-and-white facial markings, and powerful chisel-like bill. One of North America's largest woodpeckers, this impressive species inhabits mature forests, where it excavates tree trunks in search of carpenter ants and other insects.
