John James Audubon's illustration of the Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor), historically known as the Louisiana Heron, portrays an elegant wading bird distinguished by its slate-blue upperparts, white underparts, and slender reddish-brown neck. This graceful coastal species inhabits salt marshes, lagoons, and shallow wetlands, where it moves through the water in pursuit of small fish and other aquatic prey.
