John James Audubon's illustration of the Gray Kingbird (Tyrannus dominicensis), historically identified as the Piping Flycatcher, depicts a handsome songbird with slate-gray upperparts, a pale underside, dark wings, and a brilliant red crown patch. Perched among delicate green foliage and dramatic crimson blossoms of the hummingbird tree (Sesbania grandiflora), the bird creates a vibrant botanical composition that beautifully combines ornithological detail with tropical floral illustration.
