John James Audubon's illustration of the Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) portrays a delicate North American songbird recognized by its warm reddish-brown crown, soft gray face, pale underparts, and small pink bill. This gentle species inhabits open grasslands, shrubby fields, and woodland edges, where its sweet, accelerating song is a familiar sound of the countryside.
