John James Audubon's illustration of the Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) features a charming little forest bird distinguished by its crisp black-and-white plumage, short pointed bill, and small red patch on the back of the male's head. This familiar North American species inhabits woodlands, parks, and gardens, where it climbs tree trunks and branches searching for insects beneath the bark.
