John James Audubon's illustration of the Brown Lark, historically identified as Anthus aquaticus, depicts two slender brown songbirds with finely streaked plumage, delicate pointed bills, and pale underparts. Perched upon a moss-covered mound dotted with tiny mushrooms and grasses, the birds appear to call toward a small flying insect, creating a charming scene of natural history observation.
